Assistive technology was a natural choice as a theme for D4D - sometimes the simplest of devices can have a huge effect on a person's independence and dignity.

Our approach to assistive technology is quite broad, which means we can consider a range of ideas, whether they are technologically advanced, or a change to an existing assistive device.

Broadly speaking, we consider any device or technology that helps a person to perform tasks more independently, regain some control over certain aspects of their lives and assist them with daily living as part of this theme. This can range from high-tech solutions such as complex communication aids or remote controls for the lights in the house through to less sophisticated, but no less useful devices.

It's not hard to understand that not being able to communicate, not being able to access a drink independently or having to ask someone to wipe your bottom can affect self-esteem, dignity and independence. It's these sorts of daily tasks that we aim to be able to help through the development of new devices or improvements to existing ones.

At D4D we're not prescriptive about the user groups we aim to help. In the main, our work centres around older people, those suffering from long-term conditions and adults and children with disabilities and we try to be as inclusive as possible.

What all our projects have in common however, is that they enable their end user to regain ontrol over an area of daily life they might otherwise have to rely on others to help them with. We evaluate every idea for a project based on how it will impact on a person's dignity and independence.
